January 30, 2013- Earlier in fall semester, the Berry College Equestrian Team (Zone 5/Region 2) was extended an invitation to travel and compete in the Bridgewater Invitational. After putting together a small team of riders to represent Berry, Coach Margaret Knight and the team spent the first couple weeks of the semester training for the competition. On top of extra lessons, the riders took the initiative to fundraise for the show on their own spare time. The girls sat down and wrote letters to friends and family asking for donations so they could travel to the competition. They were astonished and incredibly grateful for the outpour of donations to the team. They ended up raising enough to cover show expense and to also order some new saddle pads for the team horses (who were extremely grateful as well).
After succeeding in all of this, the riders left for Bridgewater, Virginia where they faced off with 21 other teams. Despite the snow and freezing temperatures, the team successfully grabbed 4th place out of the 22. The divisions ranged through Walk/Trot, Novice, Intermediate, and Open with collaborating over fences classes as well.
Head Captain, Kristin Brennan, rode in both Intermediate Flat (1st Place) and Intermediate Over Fences (2nd Place). When asked about the Invitational she reflected: “It was a great experience to watch other riders from top schools. Every show we compete in is a chance to learn more and discover new things we can improve on. This Invitational was “Nationals’ Caliber,” and it was very beneficial to us!”
The show also hosted the Tournament of Champions Medal Class. This class was created for the top 22 riders in the country to compete in a format similar to the Cacchione Cup, which occurs at Nationals. The USEF/Cacchione Cup class for National High Point Hunter Seat rider is a two phase class comprised of an over fences phase and a flat phase, following specifications of the Open Division. The Medal Class was comprised of two phases as well, starting with a flat phase. The judge split the flat phase into two sections of 11 riders. The top 5 riders from each section were invited back to participate in an Over Fences test. The Over Fences consisted of a small course and included a trot fence as part of the test. Nicole Roos, from Berry, placed 7th in the class after both the flat and over fences phases.
The results were as followed:
1st: Bridgewater-35 points
2nd: Bridgewater (2)- 31 points
3rd: Delaware Valley- 30 points
4th: Berry College- 28 points
Schools from Zone 5 return to action this coming weekend at Chateaú Elan as the University of Georgia IHSA Team hosts their show.
