"Thoughts on Humane Training"
Horse References Index
QUESTION: I would like to hear comment on whether it is possible to train a young horse for pleasure without being inhumane. How does one go about finding a trainer to put a finish on a horse that is nicely started, without being cruel to the horse?

Thanks for your time!

Answer / Training Tip, by Steve Heckaman"

Steve Heckaman and Potential Investment The answer to this question must first be defined by what the writer deems "inhumane" methods. To some, tying a horse to the wall, all day in their stall or arena may constitute inhumane treatment, while to others, this is a standard, ordinary practice to teach patience.

I believe the more suited the horse is for the event, the easier the training process is for that individual. The better minded, the more talented one is, the easier the spirit of cooperation is to achieve. If I had a barrel horse that I wanted to show in western pleasure, I would have to approach it much differently than a horse that was bred to do the event, had the conformation, to do the event, and moved to do the event.

To find a trainer to finish your horse, I would go to a show or series of shows and watch. Watch the practice arena, and the show arena, and pick out someone or a group of someones that seem to be getting the job done. Someone that obviously has a plan, and some that has a logical purpose for what they're doing. Then ask around about the people you like. Does this person have integrity, character, and a good reputation among their peers? Bad news travels fast and good news travels slow, so someone that is given a good recommendation by many is probably a safe bet.
