First printed in October issue of Show Horse Today

The All American Quarter Horse Congress seems to be one of those shows that kind of… sneaks up on you. “Oh, it’s April! Show season is beginning (for most), I’ve got plenty of time until October.” And so, we go on through show season, as the days get hotter and hotter and suddenly, Congress entry books come out in July. Oh, it’s only July… we’ve got time. Then before you know it, school is starting. It’s September, cooler weather, and OhMyGod it’s only three weeks until Congress!

And here we are, in the month of October, or as it’s better known around here – “Congress month!”

If you’ve never been, suffice to say that it is an experience like no other. The largest single-breed show in the world, Congress receives more than 17,000 horse show entries in the three weeks of show. Last year was a record-breaking entry year, with 19,861 horse show entries! This year, the horse show is October 4-27, and the trade show, October 8-27. The Congress attracts more than 650,000 people to the Columbus area, bringing more than $180 million to the central Ohio economy!

The show truly showcases the ultimate versatility of the Quarter Horse, with reining, cow work, barrels, pleasure, patterns, jumping, the Youth Team Tournament, futurities, and just about anything else you could want to see! This year brings the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) back to the Congress, Friday, October 11. This will be one of the last events before the PBR World Finals held in Las Vegas, and will showcase some of the nation’s top bull riders. The points earned at this event will help determine who qualifies for the PBR World Finals.
