Subject: Letting Brand Pages Friend Users

Hey Facebook! Hope you had a great summer, celebrating the IPO and Mark’s wedding, and all that. We hate to bug you and we promise not to take up too much of your time, but we have a quick request.

Don’t worry, we’re not here to complain about timeline or request a “dislike” button. We just hit 250,000 “fans,” and we want to be able to show them some love. However, within your Brand Resource and Permissions Center, Usage Guidelines #6 states:

When inviting users to like your Page, say ‘like our Page’ or ‘become a fan by clicking Like on our Page’. Do not invite them to ‘friend’ your Page – users can only become friends with other users.

This really bums us out. Pop singers and sports teams have fans. We have friends. We don’t want to be up on a pedestal where “fans” can like us but we can’t like them back. After all, if you’re up on a pedestal, giving high-fives is really difficult. And we really like giving high-fives.

Your own Facebook page states that your mission is to “give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.” That’s really all we’re asking for—the power to connect with riders in a real and meaningful way. We want to write on their timelines, congratulating them on their latest blue ribbon. And we want to be able to like the new pictures they post of their horses. So please consider letting brand pages friend users. We’d sure like it if you did.

Very sincerely,

Sarah Paull
