Huntfield Derby Day Results and Wrap Up

DSC_8110 (2)Thick fog soon gave way to hot sun on the Huntfield Derby Day at the Kentucky Horse Park on June 21st The Huntfield Derby Day included the $1000 Turning Point Ranch Derby, the Huntfield Low Hunter Derby, the Equine Chronicle Youth Medal, the Huntfield Amateur Medal, the Huntfield Trainers Medal and the Lakeside Arena Team Pairs.

A derby consist of two rounds.  The first round is a Classic Hunter Style round in which the horses will jump a course of a minimum of eight jumps at 3’0 (Low Derby 2’6”) in height with at least two changes of direction. The option jumps at 3’3 (Low Derby 2’9”) in height. One bonus point will be awarded for each higher option taken.  The top twelve horses from the first round will jump a handy hunter course. The handy course will also have a minimum of 8 jumps with higher optional jumps.  It also includes handy options such as tight turns, different tracks, and jumps that must be taken at a hand gallop or trot. 

The traditional derby is open to anyone while the low derby is open to riders in the Progressive, Green, Junior, Novice & Select categories.  Both derbies include Professional and Non-Professional riders.  The class is run once, but awarded twice.
