Converging in Madison, Wisconsin, at the Alliant Energy Center complex, tens of thousands of visitors – horse people and non horse people alike -  took in the sights and sounds of the 34th annual Midwest Horse Fair, April 19-21.

An excerpt from the event program welcome page – “Horses have the power to inspire and evoke feelings of pride, and these traits are synonymous with America’s real-life heroes – those in our military and protective services” paints a picture of this year’s theme, Horses & Heroes.  In honor of heroes everywhere, the Midwest Horse Fair featured special events all weekend long to celebrate horses and American Patriotism.  On Sunday Heroes on Horses offered disabled veterans the opportunity to compete.  Also honoring our veterans, Sunday was celebrated as Military Day, and complimentary admission was offered to members of the armed forces.

On both Friday and Saturday, fair goers ended their day of shopping and demonstrations at one of the premiere shows.  Friday evening’s was, as always, the PRCA Rodeo, in all its intensity!  And, on Saturday night, horses, heroes and music were combined for the show “Epic Night of Horses & Heroes,” in concert with the Madison Brass Band.

Sunday afternoon boasted the Chase the Equine Dream Challenge, an event showcasing heroes who have rescued or adopted a horse.   Ten lucky owners who helped their horses beat the odds were given the opportunity to show off the connection between man and horse.

Whenever there was time to shop the hundreds of exhibitor booths in Exhibition Hall, outdoors or in the Coliseum, it was certainly a treat.  Whether you were shopping for a tail extension at Custom Tails,  some show clothing or accessories at Gray Horse Trading, or casual wear at Saddle Up Clothing Company, the selection was huge and the smiles abounded.

Amidst all of the clinics, demonstrations, shopping and shows, those attending the Midwest Horse Fair are sure to feel a connectedness among themselves.  Seeing old friends, meeting new friends and learning from one another are always a highlight to this special equine event.

The Midwest Horse Fair will take place April 11, 12 and 13, 2014 – see you next year! :)
