For many riders in Zone 5, Region 3, this past weekend was their final chance to shine in the ring this season. But for a select few, it was just the next step on the road to victory.
The College of Charleston hosted their annual IHSA spring show, the final hunter seat show of the season for the region, on Saturday, March 2, and Lander University hosted regionals the following day, March 3. COC ended their amazing season strong, taking home High Point Team on Saturday.
Eliza Hay of COC also tied for High Point Rider with Converse College’s Kate Falzarano. Hay has had quite the season. Not only did she finish first in the region in the Cacchione Cup points, she also qualified to Regionals in both open fences and open flat.
Placing second over fences, with Catherine Billings of Converse College placing first, Hay then placed first on the flat with Sarah Gottschalk of Georgia Southern University placing second.
College of Charleston finished the season on a high note, taking home 1st in the overall hunter seat team points for the season. University of South Carolina finished 2nd, GSU placed 3rd, Converse took home 4th and Clemson University and Lander rounded out the group with 5th and 6th.
On the Western side of things, Clemson took home the blue as the overall western team winner for the season. Lander took home 2nd, GSU 3rd, and Wesleyan finished 4th.
Rebekah Strunk of Clemson finished the season as the AQHA high point western rider for the region. She continued to dominate at regionals, taking home first in open horsemanship and reining. Timothy White of Lander took home second in horsemanship and Fabiana Rodriguez took home second in the open reining.
All riders who qualified this weekend will move forward to the Zone 5 competition at Georgia Southern University, scheduled for April 6.
